Casting and Splinting

Casting

Casting is used as an adjunct to treatment. For example, it is used to reduce spastic influence, provide stability or help achieve a particular range of motion via progressive serial casting. Applied over a period of weeks, serial casting places a low-load stretch on a muscle group, which lengthens the elastic tissues in the muscle being treated.

Splinting

Therapists make splints for upper and lower extremities using low temperature plastics, plaster or fiberglass materials. Splints can be used to control tone, maintain range of motion and to attain appropriate biomechanical positioning of muscles and joints.
